Week #8

THE OPENING KICK:
• Cleveland State has a single match this week as it continues Horizon League play Saturday, Oct. 15, by hosting UIC.
• CSU is 22-15-4 all-time against the Flames. Its 22 wins against UIC are its most against any opponent in program history.
• The Vikings have held the upper hand in the series with the Flames recently as CSU has won five of the past six meetings. Five of the past six matches have been one-goal affairs.
Kevin Blackwood and Sergio Manesio each have one goal and one assist in their careers against UIC. Blackwood scored the lone goal in last year's win.

RECAPPING LAST WEEK:
• Cleveland State began the week by facing a strong Xavier side. Despite dominating the final 65 minutes, the Vikings dropped a 1-0 decision. CSU outshot the Musketeers, 19-11.
• CSU then earned a point on the road in League play at Northern Kentucky. The Vikings outshot the Norse, 15-11. Sebastian Kalk made seven saves.

FREE KICKS:
• Head coach Ali Kazemaini announced August 17 that he will step down at the end of this season, his 11th with the Vikings.
• Kazemaini owns 81 wins for CSU, the most in program history.
• CSU has been seeded fourth or better in the Horizon League Tournament in each of the past eight seasons, the longest active streak in the league. It most recently won the league tournament in 2012.
• Freshman Lawrence Karpeh scored his team-leading fourth goal against Green Bay. He is vying to become the first freshman to lead CSU in points since 2006. No Viking rookie has led the team outright in goals since 2005.
• Cleveland State has been one of the more disciplined teams in the Horizon League in 2016. It has accrued the fewest yellow cards in the League and committed the fewest fouls in conference contests.
• Cleveland State enters this week having allowed only 15 goals in its past 20 matches dating back to last season.
• Twelve of Cleveland State's 14 goals this year have come in the second half. In fact, six of CSU's goals have come in the 78th minute or later.
• A total of eight newcomers, five freshmen and three transfers, have competed for CSU this year. All eight have started at least once, and two (Vlad Jandric & Noah Pio) have played in each of the first 12 games.
• Entering the week, freshman Sebastian Kalk leads the Horizon League in save percentage (.816) while senior Aleksandar Drobac is second in the same category (.800). Kalk is fifth among Division I freshmen in save percentage.
• Junior Jake Lagania picked up his team-leading fourth assist in the Oct. 1 draw with Green Bay. Lagania, who has an assist in three of the past six games, now has 12 career helpers, tops among active Vikings.
• CSU has more road wins (3) than home wins (1) thus far. This could be the third consecutive season in which the Vikings tally more wins on the road.

UP NEXT:
• CSU will play its non-conference finale next Tuesday, Oct. 18, as it hosts Atlantic Coast Conference foe Pittsburgh.
• The Vikings will then travel to League foe Wright State Saturday, Oct. 22.
