Kalk’s Strong Effort Helps CSU Earn Point on Road

Highland Heights, Ky. – Freshman goaltender Sebastian Kalk made seven saves and was one of the key reasons that the Cleveland State University men's soccer team was able to get a point on the road as it drew Northern Kentucky, 0-0, Saturday evening at a clear NKU Soccer Stadium.

CSU outshot the host Norse, 15-11, for the match, but neither side could find the net in 110 minutes of soccer.

Cleveland State held the majority of possession early on in the match, but it was NKU that had the first good chances.

In the 18th minute, freshman defender Vlad Jandric broke up a cross intended for a Norse player in the box who would have had a great look at goal if the ball had gotten through.

Kalk's first save of the night was a big one, as he made a great stop of a low shot with his feet in the 23rd minute on a 1-on-1 chance. Fewer than two minutes later, the rookie made another 1v1 stop, this time on the other side of the box.

A header by Jandric off a corner kick in the 27th minute went not too far wide of the left post. Junior Hesham Hammouda would have a couple of CSU's better looks in the first half as he hit two shots in the final seven minutes from inside the box, but both were wide of the target.

Cleveland State had the better looks early in the second half but could not find a way through. Junior Jake Lagania dribbled the ball into a dangerous area in the box in the 57th minute but could not get a shot away. About ten minutes later, freshman Lawrence Karpeh used his speed to beat a defender to the ball down the left flank. He took the ball almost to touch, but his cross was just behind an open forward. Lagania had a chance in the 74th minute with a shot from close range, but the keeper snuffed it out.

Northern Kentucky then gave CSU something to worry about as the half wore on. Kalk made another fantastic diving save in the 75th minute after a Norse player got a free header in the box. In the 84th minute, Kobie Qualah got in behind the CSU defense, but Kalk was again there to deny the initial chance. A second effort by Qualah was cleared off the line by the Viking defense, which helped send the game to overtime.

The only shot of the first overtime for either team was a strong effort from Lagania that beat a diving keeper but sailed wide of the left post.

CSU's best chance of the second extra session was when Lagania tried to find classmate Alec Nagucki with a pass across the face of goal, but it was hit just slightly too heavy.

Kalk would make one final save in the 109th minute, reaching to his left to push away a dangerous attempt from distance.

Cleveland State will enjoy a full week off before resuming action next Saturday, Oct. 15, as it hosts Horizon League foe UIC.
