Week #5

THE OPENING KICK:
• After playing five of its first seven on the road, Cleveland State opens a four-match homestand with two contests at Krenzler Field this week.
• CSU hosts Duquesne Tuesday, Sept. 20. The Vikings are 5-4-1 all-time against the Dukes, and this will be the fourth time in five years they have met.
• CSU has won the last two meetings against the Dukes, including a 1-0 win in Pittsburgh last year in which Hesham Hammouda scored.
• CSU will have its Horizon League home opener Saturday, Sept. 24, against Valparaiso. The Vikings and Crusaders have played every season since 2005, and this will be the seventh meeting in the last five seasons.
• The Vikings are 11-7-3 all-time against Valpo but are winless in the last four meetings. CSU's last win in the series came in the 2012 League Tournament.

RECAPPING LAST WEEK:
• Cleveland State outshot host Cincinnati but dropped a 2-0 decision after allowing two second-half goals this past Wednesday.
• CSU rebounded by picking up a 3-1 victory at Detroit Mercy. Kevin Blackwood, Sergio Manesio and Hesham Hammouda scored in the win.

FREE KICKS:
• Head coach Ali Kazemaini announced August 17 that he will step down at the end of this season, his 11th with the Vikings.
• Kazemaini owns 81 wins for CSU, the most in program history.
• CSU has been seeded fourth or better in the Horizon League Tournament in each of the past eight seasons, the longest active streak in the league. It most recently won the league tournament in 2012.
• Junior Hesham Hammouda scored his third goal of the season in Saturday's win over Detroit Mercy. He equaled his goal total from last year in fewer than half of the number of games played.
• Freshman Gabriel Pewu was named Horizon League Offensive Player of the Week Aug. 29 after posting five points on the season's first weekend.
• CSU has had balanced offensive production as six players have scored and nine have points. The Vikings' nine players with points is tied for the lead among Horizon League programs.
• Cleveland State enters this week having allowed only 10 goals in its past 15 matches dating back to last season.
• Ten of Cleveland State's 12 goals this year have come in the second half. In fact, six of CSU's goals have come in the 78th minute or later.
Sergio Manesio was named 2015 Horizon League Defender of the Year.
• A total of seven newcomers, five freshmen and two transfers, have competed for CSU this year. Six have started at least once and three have played in each of the first seven games.
• Entering the week, CSU leads the Horizon League in shots (104) and is tied for the League lead in goals (12).
• In last Saturday's win, Sergio Manesio (15) and Jake Lagania (10) both added to their lead among active Vikings in goals and assists, respectively.

UP NEXT:
• CSU will continue its homestand with only a single contest next week.
• After having three straight weeks with two matches, the Vikings' lone action next week will come when they host Green Bay Saturday, Oct. 1.
