CSU Outshoots Cincinnati but Falters in Second Half

Cincinnati, Ohio – The Cleveland State University men's soccer team outshot host Cincinnati, but the Bearcats used a CSU miscue to pull ahead and went on to claim a 2-0 victory Wednesday evening at an overcast Gettler Stadium.

CSU had better looks than the hosts in the first half, beginning with a pair of corner kicks in the first four minutes. Senior James Milli got his head on the second of those corners and sent a shot not too far wide of the left post.

Senior Dan Koniarczyk forced a diving save from the keeper in the 15th minute with a low free kick to the far right post. No fewer than five minutes later, Koniarczyk was at the center of a great chance for the Vikings when he played a beautiful ball to an onrushing Noah Pio. The sophomore tried to chip the charging keeper, but his attempt went just wide of the far right post.

Freshman Sebastian Kalk wasn't called into action all that much in the opening frame. Kalk did make a save of a low strike on net in the 12th minute that was made more difficult because it deflected off one of his defenders. Kalk also intercepted a dangerous looking cross in the 39th minute before it could reach its intended target near the far post.

CSU had five corner kicks in the first half to one for the Bearcats.

Junior Kareem Banton provided a dangerous ball from the left flank into the box in the 52nd minute, but no Viking was able to get on the end of it.

The match would turn in the 57th minute when a Viking defender made a poor back pass towards the goal that was not strong enough. A Bearcat forward was able to beat everyone to the ball and had a relatively easy finish as he was one-on-one with Kalk.

One of Cleveland State's best chances to equalize came in the 73rd minute when freshman Tommy Bielanski and Koniarczyk utilized nice combination play to give rookie Gabriel Pewu a decent look from a wide angle, but his shot went high.

Cincinnati would take advantage of a controversially called corner kick in the 80th minute to double its lead. A nice service was played in near the top of the six-yard box, and a Bearcat was able to head it home into the lower right corner.

Junior Hesham Hammouda had a couple of shots in the game's final 10 minutes, one that went narrowly over the bar and another that forced a lunging save, but CSU was unable to make a comeback attempt.

Hammouda and classmate Kevin Blackwood tied for the team lead with four shots. Kalk made six saves on the night.

Cleveland State outshot Cincinnati, 14-12, and had a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.

Cleveland State will conclude its three match road swing as it gets back into Horizon League play Saturday at Detroit.
