Vikings Win First Game of the Year 3-2 Over Portland Pilots in Double Overtime

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Cleveland State men's soccer team won their first game of the season in double overtime 3-2, on Sunday afternoon against the Portland Pilots.  With the win, the Vikings improve to 1-1-0 on the young 2013 season.

With the Vikings being out shot 17-8 in the game and allowing nine shots on goal, Cleveland State overcame adversity and fought to the very end when senior Jordan Hart sealed the victory for CSU. 

At the 20 minute-mark, Portland defender Matt Liberator netted his first goal of the season from the far right side to give Portland an early 1-0 lead.  Defender, Hugo Rhoads was credited on the assist off of a corner kick 30 yards out.  Cleveland State found the back of the net to tie the score at one at the 39 minute-mark of the match when sophomore midfielder, Cristian Arboleda snuck a ball past Portland goalie Justin Baarts from the left wing 18 yards out.  Freshman midfielder Sergio Manesio was credited on the assist.

The Vikings were outshot 10-2 in the first half and only attempted one shot on goal to Portland's six shots on goal. During the first half, Portland attempted seven shots before CSU was able to get off its first shot.

In the second half, the Vikings at the 67 minute-mark broke the 1-1 tie when senior forward, Admir Suljevic scored from the top of the box.  Senior defender Zach Ellis-Hayden was credited on the assist on a short cross pass. 

The Vikings could not control the lead late in the match when Portland tied the game with three minutes left in regulation. Forward, Steven Corbett scored from the top of the box just one yard out.  Aaron Caprio would set him up for the goal on a cross pass.

Their was no scoring in the first overtime session as the Vikings defense held strong to force double overtime.  The Vikings ended the game and captured their first win of the season when senior forward Jordan Hart netted a goal into the right corner side of the net at the 100 minute-mark.  Aslinn Rodas set up Hart's game winner on a cross pass three yards out.

Cleveland State's next match will be on Wed. (Sept. 4) when the Vikings men's soccer team will visit the Louisville Cardinals at 7 p.m.
