Cleveland State Lacrosse Wrapped Up Home Play with Loss to Utah

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cleveland State (7-7 4-4) fell in its home finale to Utah (9-4, 7-1) 16-7 on Saturday afternoon.

The Vikings got the scoring started early, as Wyatt Robertson found the back of the net less than a minute into the game. Utah responded with two unanswered goals to lead 2-1 heading into the second period.

The Utes tallied five consecutive goals to open the second as their advantage grew to 7-1 with 8:31 left in the half. Alex Van Voorhis briefly halted the run before the visitors tallied five unanswered goals to lead 12-2 at the 2:19 mark.

Gavin Held netted a goal off a feed from Van Voorhis as the Green and White trailed 12-3 at halftime.

Utah opened the new half with a goal just 38 seconds in, as the margin grew to double digits. Robertson scored his second of the day off a pass from Griffin Burkey to trail 13-4 with 3:15 to go. A minute later, Dylan Tomarchio tallied an unassisted goal to pull within 13-5 with 2:05 left in the quarter.

The Utes halted the spurt with a goal with 13 seconds left to lead 14-5 with one quarter left in regulation.

A rare scene started the fourth as goalie Connor Kernan ran the length of the field and found long pole Robbie Brazanskas for the goal to trail 14-6 with 13:11 remaining.

Connor Zwagerman had a goal sandwiched between two Utes tallies as Cleveland State fell in the home finale, 16-7.

Kernan finished with 18 saves, one shy of his season-best and tying for the fifth most in a game. The senior also led the way with five ground balls and his second assist of the season.

Robbie Stewart won six faceoffs, while Evan Moskwa was right behind with five.

Cleveland State concludes the regular season with a trip to Detroit on Saturday, April 27 at noon.
