Cleveland State Lacrosse Wins Double Overtime Thriller at Canisius, 10-9

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Cleveland State (2-3) remained unbeaten in overtime games this season as Parker Yearego scored the game-winner in double overtime as the Vikings defeated Canisius (2-3) on the road 10-9.

The Vikings took the first lead of the game at 10:06 as Zwagerman found the back of the net. A minute later, Wyatt Robertson doubled the margin off a pass from Gavin Held. Canisius accounted for the next two goals, as the game was level with 4:22 left in the first quarter. Neither team would score again, moving to the second all tied at 2-2.

The Griffs went ahead for the first time with a goal just 29 seconds into the new quarter. Three minutes later, Amiri Austin retied it on an unassisted goal.

Gavin Held executed a perfectly drawn-up play out of a timeout from Zwagerman to put the Vikings back on top, 4-3, with 8:57 remaining in the half. Canisius answered with three straight goals, including two in the final two minutes, to lead 6-4 at halftime.

A man-up goal by Michael Care off an assist from Alex Van Voorhis trimmed the deficit to 6-5 with 8:02 showing on the clock. Canisius made it a two-goal game again at the 6:31 mark before Van Voorhis picked up his second assist of the quarter as Held notched his second of the game to trail 7-6 with one quarter left in regulation.

The Green and White tied the game just 20 seconds into the fourth as Austin converted on the man-up off a feed from Van Voorhis. One minute later, Parker Yearego put Cleveland State on top, 8-7, with an unassisted goal.

Jacob Lubrant scored off a feed from Zwagerman to extend the advantage to 9-7 with 8:11 remaining in the fourth. The Griffs responded with two unanswered goals, knotting the game up at nine-apiece with 3:47 left in regulation.

Neither team would find the back of the net again as the game moved into overtime tied at 9-9.

Cleveland State held a 4-1 edge in shots during the first overtime but couldn't break through as the game shifted to a second overtime period.

The Vikings won their second overtime game of the year with 42 ticks left as Yearego netted an unassisted goal to give the Green and White a thrilling 10-9 victory at Canisius.

Cleveland State held a 52-35 edge in shots and a 40-32 advantage in ground balls. Evan Moskwa was a perfect 5-of-5 in the faceoff circle and Charlie Williams also won five faceoffs on the day.

Austin, Yearego, and Held all finished with two goals apiece. Van Voorhis was tops with three assists. Lane Miller led the defense with five ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Justin Dalum picked up his first career win in goal after making eight saves.

The Vikings return to the Krenzler Bubble on Saturday, March 9 to face St. Bonaventure for Senior Day at noon.
