Cleveland State Lacrosse Downed by No. 1 Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Cleveland State (1-2) was defeated by the reigning national champion and the top team in the country, Notre Dame (1-0) by a score of 25-3 on Wednesday evening.

The Irish blanked the Green and White 4-0 in the opening quarter. Notre Dame tallied the first six goals of the second quarter to lead 10-0 with 1:48 remaining in the half.

An own goal with 1:32 left in the half was the only tally for Cleveland State. The home team tacked on two more goals to lead 12-1 at halftime.

Amiri Austin netted the first goal of the new half, his second of the year, as the deficit dropped to 12-2. Notre Dame then scored seven unanswered goals to take a 19-2 advantage into the fourth.

For the second straight quarter, the Vikings scored first as Alex Van Voorhis found the back of the net off a pass from Gavin Held. The Irish closed the game with six consecutive goals to win 25-3.

Charlie Williams, Karson Burkey, and Carson Croy finished with two ground balls apiece. Evan Moskwa and Williams each won four faceoffs.

Justin Dalum got his second straight start in goal and had seven saves. Austin England made his debut in the final twenty minutes, accumulating three saves.

The Vikings play their first home game on Saturday, Feb. 24 against High Point at noon. This will be the first-ever meeting between the teams.
