Cleveland State Lacrosse Falls Short at No. 20 Utah, 19-12

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Cleveland State (5-7, 3-5) dropped their final regular season road game to No. 20 Utah (9-4, 8-0) 19-12 on Saturday evening. The Vikings conclude the regular season at home on Saturday, April 29 at noon against Detroit.

The Vikings wasted no time getting on the board, as Alex Van Voorhis scored just 36 seconds into the contest. Utah drew even with their first tally at the 13:40 mark.

After exchanging goals, Gannon Matthews netted an unassisted goal with 1:01 remaining in the quarter to give the Green and White a 3-2 advantage heading into the second.

The Utes tied the game for a third time at three apiece with a goal at the 10:29 mark. One minute later, Connor Zwagerman put Cleveland State back on top with an unassisted goal.

Utah netted the next two goals to claim their first advantage of the game, 5-4, with 5:48 remaining in the half. One minute later, Amiri Austin notched the equalizer as the teams headed into the locker room, all even at five.

Gavin Held opened the third quarter scoring with his second of the game off a pass from Van Voorhis to lead 6-5 with 13:39 showing. The Utes responded with four unanswered goals to reclaim a 9-6 advantage with 6:45 left in the quarter.

Van Voorhis briefly halted the run with an unassisted goal before the home team tallied back-to-back goals to lead 11-7 with one quarter to play.

The final quarter was a shootout with the teams combing for 13 goals as Utah outscored the Vikings 8-5. Cleveland State got to within four on three occasions, with the final time coming at 6:45 after Austin scored consecutive goals in a 35-second span. Utah went on to win the contest by a final score of 19-12.

Austin finished with his second hat-trick of the year, while Matthews, Held, and Van Voorhis finished with two goals apiece.

Charlie Williams picked up a team-best three ground balls. Williams and Evan Moskwa each won seven faceoffs on the evening. Cameron Logan made 16 saves between the pipes.
