Cleveland State Lacrosse Falls at Home to Bellarmine 13-8

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cleveland State (5-6, 3-4) dropped a 13-8 ASUN game to Bellarmine (9-4, 4-3) on Sunday afternoon.

Bellarmine tallied their first two goals in a 42-second span to lead 2-0 with 11:09 remaining in the opening quarter. Gavin Held got the home team on the board off a pass from Brendan Sigurdson to trail 2-1 with 6:03 showing. The Knights then ran off the final two goals of the quarter to lead 4-1.

Held and Sigurdson hooked up again just 26 seconds into the new frame as the gap closed to 4-2. Bellarmine answered right back 14 seconds later to regain a three-goal advantage.

Ryan Haigh found the back of the net at 13:54, off a pass from Gannon Matthews, to get within 5-3. The visitors again had a quick response, as the Knights scored 40 seconds later.

Carson Croy netted his first goal of the season at 5:05 mark off a pass from Haigh as the Vikings trailed 6-4 at halftime.

After trading goals to open the third quarter, Bellarmine ran off four consecutive goals to lead 11-5 with 2:08 to go. Sigurdson accounted for the Green and White goal at the nine-minute mark.

A man-up tally from Held that completed his hat-trick came with 1:04 showing as Cleveland State trailed 11-6 with one quarter left in regulation.

Bellarmine opened the fourth with an unassisted goal at 11:43 to extend their advantage to 12-6. Michael Care then scored a man-up goal off a Matthews assist to get the Green and White to within 12-7.

The Knights netted their final goal with 4:27 remaining, and Haigh capped off the game by scoring with 1:27 left as Cleveland State fell at home, 13-8.

Karson Burkey, Luke Applegate, Tanner Cox, and Held finished with three ground balls apiece. Cox forced a game-best two turnovers. Cameron Logan made ten saves on the afternoon.

Held finished with his second hat-trick of the season and Matthews had a game-best three assists.

The Vikings hit the road for the final time in the regular season, traveling to Utah on Saturday, April 22 for a 9 p.m. contest.
