Matthews Scores Game-Winner as Cleveland State Lacrosse Edges Queens 12-11

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Gannon Matthews scored the game-winning goal with seven seconds left in regulation as Cleveland State (5-5, 3-3) defeated Queens (2-9, 1-5) on the road 12-11 on Wednesday evening.

Queens scored the games first goal just 46 seconds into the contest. Ryan Haigh equalized with 9:37 to go in the quarter off a pass from Matthews. Neither team scored again, with the game moving into the second quarter tied at 1-1.

Charlie Williams won the opening faceoff and went right to goal for his second tally of the year. The Vikings extended their lead to 3-1 with 5:56 showing on a Brendan Sigurdson unassisted goal. 24 seconds later, Matthews found the back of the net to make it 4-1.

The Royals got a goal back with 2:28 remaining in the half to trail 4-2 at the intermission. 

Cleveland State pushed the margin to 5-2 behind an Alex Van Voorhis goal with 14:11 left in the third frame. Three minutes later, Matthews scored his second of the game to make it 6-2.

Queens then tallied seven unanswered goals to take a 9-6 advantage with 4:17 to go in the quarter. The Haigh brothers hooked up to snap the run with 23 ticks to go as Gareth Haigh scored off an assist from R. Haigh as the Green and White trailed 9-7 with one quarter to play.

The Royals nabbed the first tally of the final quarter with 13:22 showing on the scoreboard. R. Haigh answered back just 22 seconds later off a pass from Matthews to trail 10-8.

Following a Royals goal at the 9:20 mark, Sigurdson bagged his second of the game as Cleveland State pulled to within 11-9 with 6:36 remaining. R. Haigh then completed the hat-trick 34 seconds later with an unassisted goal as the Vikings trailed by one.

Cleveland State evened the game with 4:50 left in the contest as Sigurdson completed his hat-trick off a pass from Andrew Boniface.

Queens again reclaimed the advantage with an unassisted goal with 3:38 showing, but Sigurdson buried his fourth goal of the game off an assist from Matthews, tying the score at 12-12 with 1:44 to go.

Matthews then scored the game-winning goal with seven seconds remaining to complete his hat-trick and lift the Vikings to the 13-12 ASUN road victory.

Matthews finished with a game-best six points on three goals and three assists. Sigurdson was the top scorer for the Green and White with four goals. Four Vikings finished with three ground balls apiece as the team had 28 in the game.

Evan Moskwa won eight faceoffs on the evening. The Green and White forced nine turnovers in the game. Cameron Logan made ten saves in the cage.

Cleveland State returns home on Sunday, April 16 at noon for Youth Day against Bellarmine
