Cleveland State Lacrosse Tops Mercer on the Road, 11-8

MACON, Ga. – Cleveland State (4-5, 2-3) picked up the programs first-ever ASUN road victory on Saturday after defeating Mercer (4-8, 3-3), 11-8.

Gannon Matthews accounted for the lone goal of the first quarter, scoring at the 2:18 mark.

The Vikings extended their advantage to 2-0 with 13:19 remaining in the second quarter as Xander Johnson found the back of the net. Three minutes later, Gavin Held scored off a pass from Joe DeDonatis to make it 3-0.

Mercer broke through with 7:46 to go in the half and added a second goal a minute later to get within 3-2. However, Parker Yearego stopped the run with a goal off a feed from Lane Miller to make it 4-2 at halftime.

The Bears made it a one-goal game with a goal four minutes into the second half. The Vikings answered back with three unanswered as Alex Van Voorhis, Ryan Haigh, and Brendan Sigurdson scored to lead 7-3 with 9:12 left in the third quarter.

After trading goals, Mercer tallied the final two of the quarter to get within 8-6 with one frame remaining in the contest.

Haigh completed the hat-trick just 46 seconds into the final quarter off an assist from Van Voorhis to lead 9-6. The Bears responded with back-to-back goals to trail by one with 10:32 remaining in regulation.

Haigh bumped the margin to 10-8 with his fourth of the game off a pass from Matthews with 7:16 showing on the clock. With 3:50 to go, Van Voorhis netted the final goal of the contest as the Vikings picked up the road victory, 11-8.

Charlie Williams took all the faceoffs on the day, winning nine and picking up a team-best five ground balls. Tanner Cox and Karson Burkey each forced two turnovers on the afternoon.

Cameron Logan picked up his fourth win of the year, finishing with 12 saves.

The Green and White remain on the road to take on Queens (N.C.) on Wednesday, April 12 at 6 p.m.
