Cleveland State Lacrosse Receives Five ASUN Awards; Including Matthews as Freshman of the Year

ATLANTA, Ga. – After Cleveland State concluded their first season in the ASUN, three members of the Vikings men's lacrosse team were honored with postseason awards from the conference Wednesday, with Gannon Matthews, Amiri Austin, and Matt Manfredi all earning recognition.

Matthews was named the 2022 Freshman of the Year, First Team honoree, and All-Freshman team member. Amiri Austin was also named to the All-Freshman squad. For his off-the-field accolades, Matt Manfredi earned a spot on the All-Academic team.

Gannon Matthews | Freshman | Midfield | Eagle, Idaho | Freshman of the Year | First Team All-Conference | All-Freshman Team
Matthews, a freshman from Eagle, Idaho, becomes the first Viking in program history to earn conference awards. Matthews played in all 13 games, finishing with 19 goals and 15 assists for 34 points. He recorded a point in every game and had a season-best five points against VMI with two goals and three assists. In conference play, he totaled six goals and eight assists. In addition, he had nine ground balls, and one caused turnover.

Amiri Austin | Freshman | Attack | Acworth, Ga. | All-Freshman Team
Austin, a freshman from Acworth, Georgia, appeared in all 13 games for the Green and White. Austin boasted five goals and six assists for 11 points. In ASUN play, he put up three goals and five assists for eight points. He contributed points in four of the five conference games with a season-best one goal and two assists against Detroit.

Matt Manfredi | Senior | Midfield | Las Vegas, Nev. | All-Academic Team
Manfredi, a senior from Las Vegas, Nevada, holds a GPA of 3.85 and has been named to the President's List four times and Dean's List five times. Manfredi is a team captain for the Vikings and is also a member of SAAC and serves as the team's community service chairman. He is an important contributor to the Cleveland State community, setting up an after-school program at the Urban Community School and organizing an event for the Cleveland Food Bank. On the field, Manfredi played in ten games with a goal and an assist.
