Cleveland State Lacrosse Defeats Canisius, 12-10

Buffalo, N.Y. – The Vikings picked up their first win of the year after defeating Canisius, 12-10 on Sunday afternoon. Ryan Haigh led the attack with five goals while Gannon Matthews finished with three goals.

Canisius scored all four goals of the first quarter to lead the Vikings 4-0. Haigh ended the drought with 11:32 remaining in the second quarter, scoring off a pass from Jason Sullivan.

Matthews tallied an unassisted goal with 9:33 showing as the Green and White closed to within 4-2. Haigh then scored the next two goals off assists from Brendan Sigurdson and Matthews, tying the game at 4-4 with 3:01 to go in the half.

Canisius scored an unassisted goal at the 1:53 mark to take a 5-4 advantage into the halftime break.

The Griffins opened the second half scoring just 50 seconds in as Collin Kelly bagged an unassisted goal. Haigh answered back with his fourth of the contest off a pass from Michael Care as the Vikings trailed 6-5 with 9:48 left in the third quarter.

Following a Canisius goal, Care scored off a feed from Derek Radke as the Griffins remained in front, 7-6, with 3:27 remaining in the third. With a second to go in the quarter, Haigh tied the game at seven-apiece with an unassisted tally.

Cleveland State took their first lead of the game, 8-7, as Robbie Brazanskas scored his first goal of the year off a pass from Grayson Dague with 13:12 left in regulation. Just 55 seconds later, Sigurdson notched his first goal of the year, upping the advantage to 9-7.

Canisius responded with two unanswered goals, retying the game at 9-9 with 8:45 remaining in the fourth.

Radke notched an unassisted goal, his first of the year with 7:05 to go as the Green and White regained a 10-9 lead. Matthews then accounted for the next two goals to complete his hat-trick as Cleveland State led 12-9 with 1:04 to go in the contest.

The Griffins scored the final goal of the game with two ticks left as the Vikings claimed their first win of the year, 12-10.

Haigh finished with five goals, tying for the second-most in a single game. The junior now has seven on the year. He also had a team-best two caused turnovers.

Matthews continued his streak of multiple goals in every game and recorded his second hat-trick of the year. The sophomore also became the first Viking with double-digit goals on the year with ten.

Cameron Logan picked up his first win in a Cleveland State uniform, making 15 saves in the cage.

Evan Moskwa went 7-of-15 in the faceoff circle, picking up a team-best five ground balls.
