Cleveland State's Comeback Falls Short at Bucknell

LEWISBURG, Pennsylvania – The Cleveland State University men's lacrosse team fell in its second match of the season 15-9 to Bucknell on Sunday afternoon.

The Vikings tallied nine goals against the Bisons, marking the second straight game of netting exactly nine goals.

Bucknell jumped out to an early 2-0 lead before Nick Polydoras peppered the back of the net for the Vikings with the assist coming from Stephen Masi with 4:16 left to play in the opening period.

The Bisons responded with two goals of their own to hold a 4-1 lead heading into the second quarter of action.

Bucknell scored the first goal of the second quarter, but the Vikings struck back with consecutive goals narrowing their deficit to two, 5-3. Dylan Warner scored for the Green and White, assisted by Derek Radke at the 9:19 mark of the quarter and Stephen Masi found the back of the net with 7:29 to play in the half, assisted by Michael Wilson

The Bisons tacked on a pair of goals to close out the half, holding a 7-3 advantage at the break of Sunday's match.

The two teams opened up the second half trading goals, with Zach Whitenack registering his first goal of the 2021 season at the 13:17 mark. Bucknell opened a five-point, 9-4, lead with a goal with 9:04 to play in the quarter, before Michael Wilson narrowed the gap with a score of his own.

Bucknell closed out the third frame on a four-goal run to take a 13-5 lead heading into the final quarter.

Although the Vikings found themselves in an eight-point hole, the team never wavered, outscoring the Bisons 4-2 in the fourth quarter.

Quinn Lemke, Brendan Sigurdson, Evan Ansted and Connor Zwagerman each scored in the fourth quarter for Cleveland State.

Despite scoring four straight goals to close out the game, the Bisons would hold on, taking a 15-9 win.

Goalie Kevin Sobey, who saved 17 shots against Mercer the game prior, recorded 14 saves on 29 shot attempts.

The Vikings recorded 32 shots and forced 17 Bison turnovers in Sunday's matinee match.
