Whitenack Tabbed USILA Team of the Week

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Junior Zach Whitenack of the Cleveland State University lacrosse team was named to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Team of the Week Tuesday afternoon.

Whitenack becomes the second Viking this season to earn the honor, joining classmate Brandon Ruditz, as the association recognizes 10 worthy individual performances each week from the past seven days.

Whitenack helped the Vikings to their seventh win of the season this past weekend, extending the young program's new high for victories.

Whitenack had an impact in nearly every area of the game in Cleveland State's 17-8 win at Utah last weekend. He aided the team offensively, on faceoffs as a wing player and on the defensive end, including man-down situations.

The long-stick midfielder had a career-high three points, including his second multi-goal game this month, while setting or tying season highs in caused turnovers (3) and ground balls (4). He also played a significant role in helping the Vikings go a perfect 4-for-4 in killing off man-down situations.

One of Whitenack's goals was more noteworthy as it came from behind the midline during a Viking clear. It was the first goal scored in Cleveland State's three seasons taken on a shot from behind the midline.

Whitenack has showcased an offensive side of his game the past two seasons and now owns 10 career goals. He tops Viking long-poles in goals (5) and points (7) this season. He is also tied for third on the team in caused turnovers (13) and also has 17 ground balls on the year.

Whitenack, who was the only long-stick midfielder honored this week, is the third Viking overall to earn this accolade as sophomore Stephen Russo was named to USILA's Team of the Week last March.

Cleveland State will conclude its third season of competition Wednesday, April 24, as it hosts Detroit Mercy.
