After the first day of the Cleveland State Men's Intercollegiate at Legend Lake Golf Club, the Vikings find themselves at the top of the standings with a score of 448, thanks to superb performances by four of the CSU linksters. The team currently holds a 16 stroke edge over second-place Horizon League rival UW-Green Bay (464).
Through 27 holes, Billy Houle (Joilette, Quebec/Georges Vanier), Christian Komsa (Tecumseh, Ontario/E.J. Brennen), P.J. Myers (Westlake, Ohio/St. Ignatius) and Lyle Wilkens (Bloemfontein, South Africa/Grey College) are deadlocked in a four-way tie with scores of 112. Sophomore Mike Bognar (Seven Hills, Ohio/Normandy) is within striking distance of the lead, only six strokes back with a 17th-place score of 118.
Freshman Bill Schaefer (Independence, Ohio/Independence), competing as an individual in his first collegiate tournament, is currently three shots off the lead with a score of 115. Mike Kearns (Avon Lake, Ohio/St. Ignatius), Steve Smith (Brecksville, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights), Jeff Sutyak (Eastlake, Ohio/Eastlake North), and Matt Sokolowski (North Olmsted, Ohio/St. Edward) are also competing as individuals.
Following CSU and Green Bay in the standings are Youngstown State (466), Malone College (467), Butler (469) and Chicago State (592).
In the eight-year history of the Cleveland State Men's Intercollegiate, the Vikings have never finished first as a team. The last time CSU took individual honors was in the spring of 2000, when Matt Creech carded a one-round score of 73 in a tournament shortened by snow.
The Intercollegiate will conclude today with a final round of 18 holes. The tournament was originally scheduled for 54 holes, but was shortened to 45 due to adverse weather yesterday.
