Men's Golfers Place 17th at Belmont Invitational

April 10, 2002

After shooting a first round score of 327 at the Belmont Invitational, the Cleveland State men's golfers carded two strong final rounds with scores of 305 and 299. Their final tally of 931 gave the Vikings a 17th-place finish at the par-71 Legend Club in Franklin, Tenn.

Sophomore Lyle Wilkens (Bloemfontein, South Africa/Grey College) posted a 84-75-72---231 to lead the Vikings and tie for 54th in the tournament. Junior Christian Komsa (Tecumseh, Ontario/E.J. Brennen) and sophomore Mike Bognar (Seven Hills, Ohio/Normandy) finished tied for 58th overall, carding scores of 82-73-77---232 and 81-81-70---232, respectively.

The golfers from Austin Peay State edged out Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State on the final day. The three schools stood tied for the lead going into the last round, where Austin Peay (302-292-283---877) shot one stroke better than EKU (300-294-284---878) and two above Morehead State (294-300-285---879) to walk away with the win.

A clutch performance by Adam Shanks of Austin Peay may have been the difference in Governors' success. His 70-74-69---213 showing was best among individual scoring.

The Cleveland State will play closer to home on April 22-23 when they participate in the First Energy Invitational at Firestone Country Club in Akron. The following week, the Vikings will finish their regular season when they host the Cleveland State University Invitational at Legend Lake Golf Club in Chardon, Ohio.
