MOREHEAD, Ky. - Cleveland State closed out its fall schedule with its strongest showing to day, finishing in third place at the Rex Chaney Eagle Classic. Host Morehead State won the eight-team event at the par 72, 6,902 yard Eagle Trace GC.
The Eagles led wire-to-wire, posting an 854 to edge Southern Illinois by three strokes. The Vikings carded an 873 to finish third, eight shots clear of Evansville.
"This was a positive way to end our fall -- with our best team finish and three individuals in the top 10," CSU head coach Brian Varsey said. "It's good to see us play with a little more consistency and to have the freshmen contribute in a big way."
Morehead State's Matt Gann ran away with medalist honors, firing a tournament-low 67 to finish at 11-under par (205). Tennessee-Martin's Robert Lents was a distant second at 212, while Southern Illinois' Matt Ellis was a shot back in third place.
Sophomore Jake Scott led a trio of Vikings in the top 10, posting a 216 to finish in a tie for seventh. Freshman Kyle Cobb was ninth at 217, while senior Ben Grandy turned in a 218 to wind up 10th.
