LAWRENCE, Kan. - Cleveland State's second round score was better than nearly half of the field, but a slow start relegated the Vikings to 14th place after the opening day of the Kansas Invitational. The host Jayhawks have a 10 stroke lead heading into Tuesday's final round at the par 72, 7,092 yard Alvamar GC.

Kansas' two-under (574) easily out-distanced Iowa State (584) and Houston (588), while the Vikings checked in at 613.

"We played much better in the afternoon despite tougher conditions -- we knew we had to make up some ground," CSU head coach Brian Varsey said. "We could have put ourselves in an even better position, but gave away too many shots down the stretch. However, I still think we have a shot to move into the top 10 tomorrow if we can break 300."

The Jayhawks' Gary Woodland fired rounds of 67-68 and holds a six shot lead in the individual race at nine-under par. Houston's Jordan Irwin is in second at 141, while UC Davis' Louie Bishop is a shot further back in third.

CSU junior Doug Barber and freshman Patrick Elber are in a tie for 40th at 153, while senior Ben Grandy and sophomore Jake Scott are at 153.

The tournament concludes with 18 holes on Tuesday morning.
