RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. - Cleveland State shot a final round 304 and finished 13th at the NCAA San Diego Regional that concluded on Saturday at the par-72, 6,903-yard The Farms G.C.
Sophomore Michael Klaric wrapped up a stellar 54 holes with a one-under-par 71, finishing tied for eighth place at 215 (72-72-71). Klaric missed out on a spot at the NCAA National Championships by four shots. That honor went to Middle Tennessee State's Jason Millard who was the low individual from one of the five teams that did not qualify for nationals. Millard carded a three round total of 211 (72-69-70).
"Michael had a phenomenal tournament for us," head coach Steve Weir said. "He really hit the ball well and made some putts. He has really improved as the year has gone on and concluded his sophomore season with a great showing at regionals. This is something that he will be able to build on for next year.
"Overall, we didn't reach our goal of finishing in the top five and getting to nationals, but this was a great experience for our guys. We did some good things out there all three days, but left a lot of shots out there. I am proud of the way that this team battled and played this year and this week."
The Vikings were playing in the NCAA Regionals for the third time in the last four years and fourth time in the last six seasons after winning the Horizon League Championship on April 24 in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
The top five seeds at the San Diego Regional earned trips to Nationals which will take place in Stillwater, Oklahoma from May 31 through June 5th at the Karsten Creek Golf Club.
Top-seeded and second ranked UCLA finished on top with a 10-under par 854 total as they bested runner-up USC, the third seeded team, by three strokes (857; -7). Tournament host and fourth-seeded San Diego shot the day's best team score (280; -8) and finished in third alone with an even-par 864 total. Rounding out the top five was fifth-seeded Ohio State (865; +1) and second-seeded Texas (873; +9).
Today's round marked the final collegiate walk around the course for CSU's three seniors - Kent Monas,the 2011 Horizon League Player of the Year, Pat Elber and Drew Davidson.
"These three seniors have done so much for this program and I am grateful for everything they have contributed," Weir said. "Kent and Pat have won three Horizon League Championships and played in the regionals three times and Drew came aboard this year and helped us get back to regionals. We are going to miss these three and I wish them all the best as they move ahead with their futures."
