Vikings Finish Strong At FirstEnergy Intercollegiate

AKRON, Ohio - Cleveland State closed out the regular season with a solid 299 to move up to 11th place at the FirstEnergy Intercollegiate. Ball State claimed the title at the 14-team event which was hosted by Akron at the 7,125 yard, par 72 North Course at Firestone Country Club.

The Cardinals finished the 54-hole tournament at 10-under par (854), easily outdistancing runner-up Eastern Kentucky by 13 strokes. Kent State was in third place at 872, while the Vikings were at 925.

Ball State's Patrick Wilkes-Krier matched the tournament record with a 65 to earn medalist honors at 15-under par (201). Eastern Michigan's Korey Mahoney was seven shots back in second place after also firing a final-round 65.

Freshman Jake Scott paced CSU on Sunday with a career-low 69 to finish in a tie for 33rd at 11-over par (227). Senior Steve Weir tied for 48th six shots further back.

"I was pleased with how we came out and executed our game plan today," CSU head coach Tom Porten said. "It was a very good sign heading into tomorrow's league championship. Now we need to go out and play consistently for two more days."

Cleveland State will leave Akron and head directly to Indianapolis where the Vikings will take part in the Horizon League Championship on Monday and Tuesday (May 1-2) at Plum Creek Golf Club.
