Cleveland State Golf Finishes 2021 #HLGOLF Championships

WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana - The Cleveland State golf program wrapped up its 2021 Horizon League Golf Championships on Tuesday afternoon. The men's team finished in third place, while the women's team maintained the fifth spot throughout the duration of the championships. 

THE MEN

"First, want to thank my team for handling their business this semester and following protocols to give us the chance to compete. Like other athletes, they made sacrifices in order to play. This weekend didn't end the way we would have liked, but we got better from it. We will take the experience and get better and come back in the fall ready to make the 21-22 season one of the best in program history. Lastly, Congrats to Oakland men's golf and coach Pumford on a great weekend of play. 129 days until first event of the fall." - Head Coach Steve Weir

The Vikings ended the 2021 #HLGOLF Tournament in third place, just behind Wright State for the second spot. Over the three-day, 54-hole outing, Cleveland State shot +42 (305-296-305, 906). The Green and White landed two golfers in the top 15 at the conclusion of the event.

Zak Supelak led the men finishing T8 overall shooting five-over-par (73-69-79, 221). Fellow Viking Jules Blakely finished just two strokes behind Supelak sitting in sole possession of 12th place. Blakely recorded back-to-back birdies on the 15th and 16th holes.

Zach Robbins put together an impressive day on the links, which saw a team-leading six birdies, including four straight from the 13th to the 16th hole. Robbins finished the championships T28, shooting +18 (83-72-79, 234).

Jonny Filler and Jack Hanus each finished T33 after 54 holes, as both shot 20-over-par and saw improvements from Monday to Tuesday.

THE WOMEN

"We saved our best for last, as our round today ties our best round of the year. What an accomplishment by our players. I'm very proud of how they played and finished their round today. It's also great to have three players finish inside the top 10 at the conference tournament. We were able to send our two seniors Kaylee and Ashley out on a high note!" - Head Coach Taylor Riggs

On the women's side, the Green and White maintained the fifth spot throughout each day of the Horizon League Championships. Cleveland State ended its three-day championship with three players in the top 10, including two golfers tied at six.

Both Kaylee Neumeister and Madison Butler finished T6 (+10) after 54 holes. Neumeister (74-76-76, 226) sat in the top 10 throughout each round of the championships, while Butler (77-76-73, 226) saw improvement throughout each round. The junior tallied a team-high four birdies on the day.

Meg Rossouw (77-78-75, 230) finished T8 at +13. Rossouw notched a three-stroke improvement from Monday to Tuesday, resulting in moving up four spots on the leaderboard.

Ashley Knight (85-85-80, 250) and Lexi Knight (86-90-78, 254) round out the Vikings, finishing T40 and 43rd, respectively. Both sisters moved up a spot on the leaderboard from the second to third round, as Ashley Knight snagged a five-stroke improvement and sister Lexi recorded an impressive 12-stroke improvement.
