INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana - The Cleveland State men's golf team finished their season-opening tournament in fifth place on Tuesday at the Butler Invitational, moving up one spot on the leaderboard from the first day to the second.
The Vikings finished four strokes ahead of Indiana-Kokomo for the fifth spot of 11 competing teams. Cleveland State scored 301-296-297, 894 over the course of the two-day, 54-hole, tournament.
Leading the way for Cleveland State was junior Jack Hanus. Hanus finished 28th scoring 73-74-77, 224, tallying six birdies throughout his time at the Butler Invitational
Senior Zak Supelak (79-73-73, 225) and sophomore Jonny Filler (75-78-72, 225) finished just one stroke behind Hanus, tying for the 29th spot in the tournament. Filler's 72 on the final 18 holes marked a team-best during the progam's season-opening invitational. He notched back-to-back birdies on the 12th and 13th holes on Tuesday.
Rounding it out for the Vikings were Jules Blakely (75-74-78, 227) and Zach Robbins (78-75-75, 228), finishing tied for 36th and 42nd place, respectively.
Cleveland State will golf again in two weeks at the at Flyer Invitational on Monday, April 12 and Tuesday, April 13. Last year at the Flyer Invitational, Blakely had his best finish of the season, tying for first place with a score of 215, becoming the first Cleveland State medalist since Anton Krecic was the medalist at the 2017 Horizon League Championship.
