VERONA, N.Y. - Freshman Jack Hanus and senior Anton Krecic both shot final-round 69's (-3) to lead the Cleveland State University men's golf team as it concluded play in its season-opening event Monday—the Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate.
The Vikings shot 295 as a team Monday (+7) in the final round of the 54-hole event, the sixth best round among the 18 teams. With that effort, CSU moved up one spot to finish 13th as a team with a three-round total of 904 (+40). The tournament was played at the par-72 Kaluhyat Golf Course at Turning Stone Resort.
Hanus, playing as an individual, finished the tournament at -3 (213), as Monday's round of 69 left him in a tie for fifth place among the 100 competitors. Hanus was the top freshman finisher at the event, and three of the four players ahead of him hail from Power Five schools.
After bogeying two of the first four holes he played, Hanus birdied three holes in succession—the par-4 fourth, par-3 fifth and the par-5 sixth. He was -4 in his final 14 holes on the round and made six birdies on the day.
Hanus, who did not make a double bogey (or worse) at all in the tournament, tied for first in the field with 15 birdies in the event. He was among the top 10 in par-3 scoring and par-4 scoring.
Krecic used a similar scorecard as Hanus to post his first sub-70 round of the season. He made six birdies to cover three bogeys to post -3 in the round. He used birdies on three straight holes—the par-3 fifth, the par-5 sixth and the par-4 seventh—to move to -3 and then made par on the final four holes of his round.
Krecic finished the event in a tie for 27th with a score of +8 (224).
Sophomores Jules Blakely and Zak Supelak both shot +3 (75) though they did so in different fashions. The 75 was the best round of the tournament for both players.
Blakely was +5 through five holes but made three birdies, nine pars and a lone bogey over his final 13 holes to finish strong.
Supelak was just +1 through 16 holes on two birdies, three bogeys and 11 pars but a bogey-bogey finish left him at +3.
Sophomore Zach Robbins used his second straight +4 (76) after an opening round 73 to be third-highest Viking on the leaderboard in a tie for 37th.
Freshman Miles DeMuesy finished his first collegiate tournament at +27 (243).
Cleveland State tied for second in the event in par-3 scoring with an average of 3.10 strokes per hole.
Hanus' cumulative 213 is the third-lowest total by a Viking at the Turning Stone event in the decade that CSU has attended. It is the lowest ever by a CSU freshman at the event.
The Vikings will resume action Sept. 15-16 at the Raising Cane's EKU Intercollegiate.
