VERONA, N.Y. - The Cleveland State University men's golf team opened its 2018-19 season Sunday at the Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate.
Playing the par-72 Kaluhyat Golf Course, CSU sits in 14th place as a team after 36 holes with a 609 (+33).
Freshman Jack Hanus, playing as an individual, is the top Viking on the leaderboard after two rounds. He opened with a round of +2 (74) before coming back to post -2 (70) in the afternoon. Hanus made nine birdies on the day and did not make any double bogeys or worse throughout the 36 holes.
Hanus was -4 over his final 12 holes on the day, including making birdies on three consecutive holes, the par-3 17th, the par-4 18th and the par-5 1st. He is two shots out of a top-five position entering the final round in the field of 100 players.
Sophomore Zach Robbins had the best opening round of the season for Cleveland State with a +1 (73). He made two birdies, three bogeys and 13 pars over the opening 18 holes. He shot +4 (76) in the second round and is tied for 31st.
Sophomore Jules Blakely was undone by a rough start in his first round of the season but bounced back to shoot even par over the final 15 holes. He followed up a +4 (76) with a +5 (77) in the second round and is tied for 50th.
Senior Anton Krecic and sophomore Zak Supelak had identical showings Sunday as both shot +4 (76) in the first round and +7 (79) in the second round.
Freshman Miles DeMuesy began his first collegiate tournament with a +8 (80) but did well to shave four strokes off in the afternoon to finish with a +4 (76).
Cleveland State was fourth in the field in pars with 112.
The final 18 holes will be played Tuesday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
