Cleveland State Men’s Basketball Falls at Green Bay

Green Bay, WI-Cleveland State ended its swing through the State of Wisconsin by dropping a hard fought 79-71 decision to Green Bay on Sunday afternoon. Both teams have identical 11-8 overall records. Green Bay improves to 6-2 in Horizon League play, while the Vikings fall to 4-4. 

The game was a seesaw battle with 11 lead changes and eight ties. Cleveland State led for over 15 minutes of game action, including holding a six-point advantage with under nine minutes to play, but Green Bay mounted a late charge to seal the game.

Tristan Enaruna finished with 22 points to lead all Cleveland State scorers. Enaruna finished 9-of-13 from the field, part of a solid shooting day for CSU overall, as the Vikings finished at 46 percent from the floor.

Jayson Woodrich recorded 20 points on 8-of-13 from the floor. Woodrich finished in double figures for the sixth time in seven games.

Tae Williams finished with 18 points on 8-of-14 shooting. Williams tied for the team lead with three assists in the game. 

The first half was back and forth, with neither team holding more than a five-point advantage throughout. Green Bay carried a 38-35 lead into the halftime break. 

Cleveland State quickly erased the deficit at the start of the second half. The Vikings outscored the Phoenix 7-3 in the opening minutes to take a 42-41 lead.

Cleveland State attempted to create separation around the midway point of the second half. Tevin Smith blocked a Green Bay layup attempt, which led to an and-one runout for Williams which gave the Vikings their largest lead of the afternoon at 58-52 with 8:54 remaining.

Enaruna followed with a three-pointer that kept the lead at five with 6:21 to go, it was 63-58 Vikings.

Cleveland State went cold from the field after that point, as Green Bay mounted a 12-0 run that turned a four-point deficit into an eight-point lead with just over a minute to play. The Vikings attempted to cut into the lead as the final seconds ticked away, but the effort was too little, too late.

Cleveland State returns home on Saturday to play host to Purdue Fort Wayne. The game is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. tip from the Wolstein Center.
