Cleveland State Men’s Basketball Moves into First-Place Tie with Win at Green Bay

Green Bay, WI-The Cleveland State Men's Basketball team defeated Green Bay 76-65 on Thursday night, moving to 14-5 in the Horizon League and into a share of first place in the league standings with one regular season game remaining.

The Vikings trailed for much of the first half against an upstart Phoenix squad, and seized control early in the second half to nail down a fifth consecutive victory. The Vikings shot 50 percent from the field (33-66) and won the rebounding battle 38-32.

Tae Williams had a career night, finishing with season highs in points and rebounds. Williams finished with 30 points and 14 rebounds, in addition to three assists and a steal. The junior finished 14-20 from the field and connected on both of his attempts from the free throw line.

Tristan Enaruna finished with 14 points, continuing his streak of 17 consecutive games in double figures. Enaruna was 6-8 from the field and added five rebounds and four assists. Drew Lowder added 12 points and Yahel Hill finished with 11. The two combined for all five of the Vikings' three-point field goals in the game. Hill finished in double figures for the second time in three games.

The game was a back-and-forth affair early. The score was tied at 12 at the first media timeout before Green Bay went on a mini 8-0 run to open up a nine-point lead less than seven minutes into the contest.

Green Bay held the lead through the rest of the first half. The Phoenix led 38-34 at the halftime break.

The Phoenix came out of the locker room and expanded the lead up to as high as eight early in the second half. The Vikings clawed back to tie it and eventually took control with a run midway through the half.

A Lowder three headed into the under-12 media timeout kick started a 13-0 Cleveland State run that pushed the Vikings from down two to a double-digit lead. Lowder had 10 points during the stretch that would put the Vikings ahead for good.

The Viking lead grew to as large as 15 down the stretch as Williams took the game over late. He was already in double figures at halftime and scored three buckets in a two-minute stretch at the tail end of the game to cap off a career night.

Cleveland State closes the regular season with a matchup against Milwaukee on Saturday evening. Cleveland State is currently tied with Youngstown State for first place in the conference standings at 14-5. The Vikings can earn at least a share of the Horizon League regular season title with a victory on Saturday. The game against the Panthers tips off at 8 p.m. EST.
