Men’s Basketball is headed to Indy after Quarterfinal win over RMU

CLEVELAND – The Cleveland State men's basketball program will get its bags packed for Indianapolis as the Vikings punched their ticket to the Horizon League Semifinals for the second consecutive season after downing visiting Robert Morris, 83-67, in the Horizon Quarterfinals at the Wolstein Center on Thursday night. 

The Vikes got big games from Torrey Patton (25 points), D'Moi Hodge (15) and Tre Gomillion (13) and will take on Wright State in the conference semifinal game on Monday, March 7 at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum. Tipoff for the postseason contest is set for 7 PM ET on ESPNU.

 

THE BASICS

FINAL SCORE: Cleveland State – 83, Robert Morris – 67

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

- Patton led the Viking attack with 25 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the field. The senior also added six rebounds, four assists and three steals. The offensive outburst tied a season-high for the Dayton, Ohio native.

- Hodge added 15 points of his own on an efficient 5-of-9 night, which included a 3-of-6 mark from beyond the arc. The senior also picked up four assists and three steals in the contest.

- Gomillion continued the contributions by the senior class as the Augusta, Ga. native dropped 13 points along with three points, two helpers and two steals. It was his 14th double-digit game of 2021-22.

- As a unit, CSU has nine steals and just 10 turnovers while they forced RMU into 18 mistakes of their own.

- Cleveland State shot 54.2 percent from the field, the 11th time this season that the squad has finished above 50 percent as a unit in a contest.

- The Vikings finished with an edge in points off of turnovers (20-9), in the paint (48-34), second chance opportunities (13-5), fast break (20-4) and points off the bench (19-16).

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

CSU and RMU played to an even 6-6 tie through the first 5:40 of the game as each team had to adjust to a scoreboard malfunction.

- The Vikings would find their bearings and end the half with a 30-24 advantage as each teams traded momentum back and forth to start things out.

- It was a different story in the second half as Cleveland State started to click. The team raced out to a 63-52 advantage over the first 12 minutes of the second half.

- Robert Morris was able to cut the lead to seven with 3:14 left, but CSU ended the game on a 12-0 run to close out the 83-67 victory.
