Men’s Basketball kicks off Wisconsin road trip with victory over Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE – The Cleveland State men's basketball program took another step towards its second straight Horizon League regular-season title as the team started its Wisconsin road trip with a 78-61 victory over conference foe Milwaukee at the UWM Arena on Friday night.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

Tre Gomillion led the charge with a game-high 20 points on 7-of-9 shooting to go with five rebounds and three assists. It was the second-highest point total of his 2021-22 season. The Augusta, Ga. native went a perfect 3-of-3 from beyond the arc.

- Torrey Patton chipped in 11 points as he went 7-of-8 at the charity stripe. He also registered seven rebounds and three assists.

- Yahel Hill was the third Viking in double-figures with 11 points to go along with a board and a steal.

- D'Moi Hodge was also a big contributor with 10 points, two rebounds and an assist.

- Nine Vikings scored overall in this contest.             

- CSU correct itself at the line as the squad went 24-of-30 (80 percent) from the charity stripe.

- Cleveland State outrebounded Milwaukee by a 39-23 margin.

- The Vikings also held the edge in assists (14 to 12), points in the paint (32 to 22), fastbreak points (11 to 3) and bench points (27 to 21).

- The game featured four ties and 10 lead changes, with the majority of that coming in the early part of the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The game started off as a back-and-forth affair and the Panthers were able to take a slight 14-11 lead with 12:58 left in the first.

- That is when Cleveland State took control of the game as CSU went on a 31-14 charge, which included two 10-0 runs, to end the opening half of play.

- The Vikings were able to jump out to the 17-point first half lead thanks to shooting over 51 percent and holding a 22-10 advantage in points in the paint.

- Milwaukee would try to battle back in the second, but the damage was already done as the Vikings wouldn't let the Panthers get closer than 10 points. 

- CSU ended the game with a 19-12 run over the final 8:36 to close out the road victory.

NEXT UP

The Wisconsin road trip continues for the Vikings, who head to Green Bay to take on the Phoenix at the Kress Center on Sunday afternoon. Tipoff is set for 3 PM ET and the game will be played in front of a national audience on ESPN+.
