Men’s Basketball celebrates Senior Day with big victory

CLEVELAND – The Cleveland State men's basketball program celebrated its Senior Day in a big way as the Vikings cruised to an 83-45 victory in front of a record-breaking crowd at the Wolstein Center on Saturday afternoon.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

- D'Moi Hodge led the charge for the Vikings as the senior finished with 19 points (on 8-of-11 from the field), in just 23 minutes of play. He also added five boards, two assists and a game-high five steals. 

- Fellow senior Torrey Patton was right behind with 18 points of his own and he also chipped in six rebounds and three helpers.

- The senior contributions continued as Broc Finstuen scored 10 and grabbed seven boards.

- Senior Deante Johnson dropped in eight points and four rebounds, an assist and a steal. He went a perfect 4-of-4 from the line.

- Yahel Hill, another senior student-athlete, scored eight points to go with two points.

- Also scoring for the Vikings were Tre Gomillion (six points), Jayson Woodrich (six), Nathanael Jack (three), Aria Eskandari (three), Deshon Parker (two), and Mabor Majak (one) as 11 different student-athletes made their way onto the scoring sheet.

- Cleveland State led for 39:10 of the contest.

- CSU has won seven of its past nine games, all in conference play.

- The Vikings improved to 14-3 in the Wolstein Center and will embark on a five-game road trip to end the regular season. The stretch will all take place over the next 13 days, which begins against Purdue Fort Wayne on Monday.

- CSU improved to 7-4 all-time and has now won its past six games against IUPUI.

- On Senior Day, the graduating group combined for 75 of the team's 83 points (90.3 percent).

- The Cleveland State squad racked up 34 points in the paint, 33 off turnovers to go with 31 points off the bench. 

- The city of Cleveland really showed out for the team's final home contest of the regular season with 4,002 in attendance. It was the largest crowd of the year and the highest-attend game since Feb. 2, 2015.

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The two squads battle hard through the first nine minutes as IUPUI was able to go ahead 11-9 with 11:57 left in the first.

- The Vikings responded in a big way as the group went on a 35-8 run to end the opening half to take a 29-point lead into the locker room. 

- The strong momentum carried over into the second for the Vikes as they edged the Jags 37-28 over the final 20 to close out the 83-45 conference victory.

 NEXT UP

The Vikings are right back in action as the squad takes the short trip to Purdue Fort Wayne to take on the Mastodons on Monday, Feb. 14 at Memorial Coliseum. Tipoff for the conference contest is set for 7 PM CT and the game can be watched live nationwide on ESPN+.
