Cleveland State Senior Torrey Patton to Exercise Extra Year of Eligibility

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cleveland State men's basketball senior guard/forward Torrey Patton has announced his intent to exercise his extra year of eligibility and remain a Viking for the 2021-22 season using the season-of-competition waiver. A season-of-competition waiver restores a used season when a student-athlete participates limitedly and cannot complete the season due to extraordinary circumstances.

This past season, Patton averaged a career-best 14.7 points, a career-best 8.0 rebounds and a career-best 2.7 assists in a career-high 31.7 minutes per game. His 14.7 points and 8.0 rebounds led the Vikings in 2020-21, while his 2.7 assists ranked him second on the team, right behind Craig Beaudion.

The 6-5 guard/forward poured in a career-high 33 points on 13-19 (.684) shooting from the floor, including a 3-6 (.500) clip from three-point territory against Detroit Mercy on Feb. 12, 2021. Against nationally-ranked Ohio State on Dec. 13, Patton grabbed a career-high tying 14 rebounds.

Voted to be a member on the All-League First Team, Patton became the first Viking to be named to the All-League First Team since Trey Lewis and Anton Grady in 2015. The Trotwood-Madison product finished 15th in the Horizon League in points per game, while finishing seventh overall in rebounds per contest.

Throughout the course of the team's record-breaking season, the Dayton, Ohio, native recorded two career-high scoring streaks, tallying 10-or-more points in nine straight games on twice (Dec. 19-Jan. 15, Jan 22-Mar. 9). Patton logged double figures in 22 of 24 Horizon League contests this past season, while leading the team with seven double-doubles.

Named the 2021 Horizon League Tournament MVP, Patton recorded a double-double in all three tournament games for the Green and White, including a 30-point, 13-rebound effort in a 108-104 triple overtime win over Purdue Fort Wayne. Over the course of the Horizon League Tournament, Patton averaged 22.3 points and 12.0 rebounds.

The Cleveland State men's basketball program is coming off of one of its most successful seasons in program history, as the two-time Horizon League Coach of the Year, Dennis Gates, led the Green and White back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2009 and only the third time in program history, winning the Horizon League Tournament.

This past season, the Vikings were also crowned the 2020-21 Horizon League Regular Season Champions, finishing atop the #HLMBB standings for the first time in 10 years (2010-11) and only the second time in program history.

Season tickets to watch the reigning Horizon League Champions begin as low as $60.00. To learn more about becoming a season ticket holder, please contact the Cleveland State ticket office at 216-687-4848 or vikingathletics@csuohio.edu.
