GAME RECAP

CLEVELAND -- Sophomore Tyree Appleby recorded the first triple-double in Cleveland State history as he finished with 19 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists leading the Vikings to a 78-68 victory over Milwaukee on Saturday in the Wolstein Center.

Appleby, who flirted with a triple-double earlier this season against Bowling Green, notched the triple-double when he fed Jaalam Hill for a layup with 1:38 to play in the second half.

It was a record-setting afternoon for Cleveland State as the Vikings also set a school record by connecting on 16 three-pointers, which topped the previous record of 15 three-pointers set earlier this season against Bowling Green on Dec. 5.

Appleby led four players in double figures in scoring as Hill also had 19 points, while Dibaji Walker had 15 points and Rashad Williams added 12 points.

Cleveland State shot 50 percent from the floor and 48.5 percent from the free throw line to help the Vikings overcome a 49-29 rebounding deficit.

The Vikings, who improved to 7-19 overall and 2-11 in the Horizon League, took the lead for good midway through the first period when Walker drilled a three-pointer giving CSU a 19-16 lead.

Cleveland State used a 13-4 run to extend the lead to 35-22, which was the Vikings largest of the first half.

Milwaukee, which dropped to 9-16 overall and 4-8 in the Horizon League, rallied to cut the deficit to 37-31 with 2:49 to play in the first half. CSU recovered to take a 46-37 lead into the intermission.

The Vikings extended the lead to 56-42 with 16:29 to play in the second half on a three-pointer by Williams.

A three-pointer by Jake Wright trimmed the CSU lead to 60-53 at the 10:06 mark of the second half, but the Vikings responded with a 9-2 run fueled by three three-pointers by Williams to increase the lead to 69-55 with 6:35 to play in the game.

Milwaukee got to within six points of the lead with 38 seconds to play, but Stefan Kenic hit two free throws and Hill sealed the victory with a dunk off a feed from Appleby.

Cleveland State will return to action on Thursday (Feb. 14) when it hosts UIC at 7 p.m. in the Wolstein Center.
