Five Score in Double Figures as Vikings Win at Youngstown State, 99-94, in Double OT

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cleveland State rallied late to force overtime and survived a pair of game-winning shot attempts by Youngstown State and defeated the Penguins, 99-94, in double overtime in the regular season finale on Saturday night at the Beeghly Center.

The Vikings improved to 9-22 overall and 6-12 in the Horizon League, while the Penguins fell to 8-23 overall and 6-12 in the League.

Both teams will play a first round game in the Horizon League Championship on Friday night in Detroit. The official bracket and seedings will be released on Sunday night.

Bobby Word led the Vikings tonight with 25 points, hitting 7-of-9 from three-point. The seven threes tied a career-high and he also added six rebounds.

Stefan Kenic scored 17 points – including 15 in the second half and overtime – with five rebounds. Tyree Appleby added 12 points, three rebounds and five assists in 18 minutes off the bench, while Kenny Carpenter had 10 points, six rebounds and four assists.

Kasheem Thomas added 10 points, four rebounds and three assists and Anthony Wright posted eight points, eight rebounds and four assists.

The Vikings shot .567 (34-60) from the field and hit 11-of-17 (.647) from three-point.

Tonight was the most points by CSU since a 113-61 win over Cedarville on Dec. 12, 2009 and it marked the most by a Viking team against a Division I opponent since a 109-105 victory over Milwaukee on Jan. 20, 2000.

There were 20 ties and 25 lead changes tonight and neither team led by more than five points.

YSU led 75-70 with 26 seconds left, but Word hit a three-pointer with 20 seconds left and after a Penguin miss at the free throw line, Appleby answered with a layup to knot the game at 75-75 with eight seconds left and YSU's Cameron Morse missed a three-pointer at the buzzer.

In the overtime, Morse broke an 84-84 tie with a three-pointer with 52 seconds to play, but Kenic tied the game with a three with just seven seconds to play. Morse once again had a chance to win the game, but his 15 footer on the baseline was off to force double overtime.

The Vikings opened up a 96-92 lead with 43 seconds to play on a pair of Appleby free throws, but YSU answered with two free throws to cut the deficit back to two points. After Appleby split two free throws, the Penguins missed a three-pointer and Wright grabbed a rebound with three seconds left and hit two free throws to seal the win.
