CLEVELAND, Ohio – Kenny Carpenter scored 23 points and Evan Clayborne added a career-high 10 points to help Cleveland State to a 70-67 win over IUPUI on Thursday night in the Wolstein Center.
CSU improved to 5-15 overall and 2-5 in the Horizon League, while the Jaguars fell to 7-12 overall (4-4 HL).
STAT LEADERS
- Carpenter finished with a game-high 23 points, including 19 in the second half. He hit 8-of-12 from the field and added a pair of rebounds.
- Stefan Kenic tallied 14 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
- Clayborne finished with a career-high 10 points, hitting 5-of-7 from the field and tied a career-high with seven rebounds. He added two steals.
- Jamarcus Hairston added six points, eight rebounds and four steals.
- Tyree Appleby dished out six assists.

- "Give this team a ton of credit for as hard as they are fighting. This was our eighth one possession game of the season. We are certainly gaining experience trying to find a way to finish these tight games. I thought we had a ton of success when we played the way we wanted to play, but we have to do that with more consistency."

FIRST HALF RECAP
- The Vikings hit their first 10 shots of the game to race out to a 23-6 lead midway through the first half.
- IUPUI cut its deficit down to seven points (27-20) with 6:44 to play, but Word was fouled on a three point attempt and hit all three free throws to push the lead back to double figures.
- The Jaguars answered with six straight points before a Kasheem Thomas layup with five seconds left in the half gave CSU a 32-26 lead at the break.
SECOND HALF RECAP
- The Jaguars took their first lead of the game (44-43) on a three-point play from T.J. Henderson at the 13:15 mark.
- The teams traded baskets until a Carpenter three-pointer at the 10:54 mark ignited a 15-2 CSU run that gave the Vikings a 61-49 lead with just under eight minutes to play.
- IUPUI came right back, using a 14-4 run to cut the lead to two points (65-63) with just under three minutes to play.
- Appleby answered with a free throw, but Jaylen Minnett converted a four-point play to give IUPUI a 67-66 lead with 44 seconds to play.
- On the ensuing possession, Appleby's floater rolled off the rim, but Hairston was there for a tip-in, which was his fifth offensive rebound of the night.
- Kenic had a steal on the other end and Carpenter was fouled. He made both free throws to extend the lead back to three points (70-67) with four seconds left and IUPUI's long three-point attempt was off the mark at the buzzer.
KEY STATS
- CSU shot 25-of-53 (.472) from the floor, while IUPUI was 25-of-58 (.431).
- IUPUI committed 21 turnovers with CSU turning them into 21 points. The Vikings had 13 steals.
- CSU made 22 turnovers that the Jaguars turned into 17 points.
- Both teams grabbed 32 rebounds.
- CSU was 15-of-18 at the free throw line, while IUPUI was 11-of-13.

- CSU hosts UIC on Saturday (Jan. 20) at 3:30 pm in the Wolstein Center.
