Jan. 18, 2002

The Cleveland State men and women's fencing squads competed in the Northwestern University Duals meet on January 11, 12 and 13. The men's team finished with an overall record of 3-5 while the women posted a 2-8 showing.

The men's team recorded its first of three wins on day one by defeating Detroit 19-6, thanks in part to a 9-0 performance by the sabre squad and a 7-2 record by the foils. CSU collected its final two victories on the second day with a 15-12 win over Johns Hopkins and a 20-1 decision against Lawrence after CSU picked up forfeit victories in the sabre and epee competitions.

The women's squad completed the tournament with two victories, coming by way of a 14-11 win over Lawrence on day one and a 14-9 defeat of Detroit on day two.

CSU also saw action against host Northwestern, Wayne State, North Carolina, Michigan State, Michigan, Fairleigh Dickinson, and Temple.

The Viking fencers will next compete on January 18-21 at the North America Cup in South Bend, Ind. before coming home to host the Cleveland State Open on January 26.
