CLEVELAND, Ohio - Both Cleveland State fencing teams swept Case Western and Oberlin on Saturday afternoon at the Cleveland State Duals in Woodling Gym on Alumni Day.

"I was very happy with the support and turn out from our alumni," head coach Jim Sager said.

The Viking men's team knocked off Oberlin, 25-2, and handed CWRU a 22-5 setback to improve to 11-1 this season. The women's squad defeated Oberlin, 21-4, and Case Western, 20-7, and moved to 7-5 this season.

With the two wins, CSU improved to a combined 224-73 in its 11 wins this season.

"I am extremely impressed with the progress we have made in the fall," Sager said. "The men are off to the best start since I have been here and the women have been very consistent with their performances. After a break for the holidays, we are going to hit a stretch of tough competition against some quality opponents."

Liran Gross led the men's squad by posting a perfect 6-0 mark with the foil to earn MVP honors of the event. Gross improved to 34-2 this season with his performance.

In addition, John Marshall and Stephen Montgomery went 6-0 in the foil as CSU posted a perfect 18-0 mark with the foil. Andy Snell went 6-0 in the epee.

Hannah Simms and Danielle Shepherd led the women's squad as each tallied a perfect 5-0 mark with the sabre.

Both teams are slated to return to action on Jan. 29 at the Penn State Duals.
