Columbus, Ohio - The Cleveland State fencing team opened the 2009-10 season when they participated in the Ohio State Duals, facing Michigan State, Chicago, Ohio State, Illinois, Michigan, Bowling Green, Iowa and Indiana. The lone win for the Vikings came against Bowling Green, when the men topped the Falcons 14-10.
Senior Liran Gross led the men with a 21-3 record in the foil, posting the most victories on both the men's and women's squads. Senior Brooke Snyder went 15-4, including an overtime victory against an Ohio State fencer, as the lone Viking in the women's epee.
The CSU men were had close rounds against both Chicago and Illinois, losing by one, 14-13, while the women had their closest round against Bowling Green dropping a 12-9 decision.
Women's foil went 25-23, with the men's epee and men's foil going 36-26 and 36-36 respectively.
"Overall the team performed very well in their first meet of the season," head coach Andy Tulleners said. "Liran and Brooke had great performances opening their senior seasons, while Patrick Weber had an impressive first outing, going 14-7. I am looking forward to continuing the season and seeing how we can improve before our next meet."
The Vikings return to action when CSU hosts its lone home meet of the season on January 23. The visiting teams include Case Western Reserve, Oberlin, Xavier, Michigan, Michigan State and Bowling Green. The meet will mark the largest home meet in over 10 years at Cleveland State.
