EVANSTON, Illinois - The Cleveland State men's and women's fencing teams competed at the Northwestern Duals from Jan. 30-31. The men went 1-8, while the women's squad posted an 0-10 mark.

"This was the toughest event of the season," head coach Andy Tulleners said. "I thought the men performed admirable and the women also fenced very well.

"While we are clearly competitive with some of the stronger teams like Ohio State, and Notre Dame, I now must focus the team on strengthening bout strategy and mental focus as we approach out last competition at Notre Dame this weekend and NCAA regional qualifiers at Ohio State from March 7-8."

John Marshall led the men's team with a 19-8 record for the weekend. Marshall has a 16-11 record against varsity fencers this season.

Liran Gross finished the weekend with a 16-11 record.

The women were led by Brooke Snyder with a record of 13-16, while Courtney Zemkosky finished 9-20 for the weekend.

Both teams had some very close bouts losing 5-4 bouts to Ohio State, Penn State and Notre Dame.
