Cleveland, Ohio - Nine Vikings, including assistant coach Vince Cianciola were in action on Sunday at the John Szent Kiraly Memorial Open held in Woodling Gymnasium combining for 74 victories on the day. The event, which was hosted by Cleveland State, was the third largest locally run fencing event Cleveland has had in the last 20 years with 119 fencers competing at all age and experience levels.

"I am very happy with the way the memorial turned out today, we had an excellent number of participants and I think that everyone enjoyed being able to compete against some great competition," head coach Andy Tulleners said. "Liran had a great day for us, putting up a tough bout against Rimmele that was great to watch. We were able to take things from Saturday's meet and work on them today, and hopefully we can continue this into the Northwestern Duals."

Senior Liran Gross led the Vikings, ending the day with a combined record of 16-3 in both the foil and saber. Gross finished sixth in the foil after having a perfect 5-0 record through the pool, he was knocked out in the elimination round by Tom Rimmele, a former French junior national champion. In saber, Gross finished tied for third with an 8-2 record.

John Marshall competed in all three events for CSU, his best finish coming in the foil where he ended the tournament in seventh place with a 7-2 record. Marshall duplicated his 7-2 record in the epee, while he finished at 6-3 in the saber.

CSU assistant coach Vince Cianciola participated in the epee and saber, finishing 10th and seventh respectively. In the epee Cianciola's only loss came in the elimination round ending with a 7-1 record. In saber he fell once in the pool and again in the elimination round for a 6-2 finish.

Brooke Snyder was the last Viking to participate in more than one event, finishing with a 3-4 record in the epee and a 2-5 record in saber.

Patrick Weber had a strong showing in the epee, going 5-0 in the pool before dropping his fifth bout in the elimination round for a third place finish. Weber ended with a 9-1 record on the day.

Also in action for the Vikings were Stephen Montgomery (6-2, foil), Greg Allen (4-4, saber), Bryan Twitchell (1-5, saber) and James Pitchford (0-7, epee).

Former CSU fencer Jon Bibb also competed in the memorial, taking home second place honors after recording a 5-0 pool record and a 5-1 record in the elimination round.

Other notable fencers that participated were Rimmele (10-1, foil, 1st place), Samantha Nemecek who has finished in the top eight at the NCAA championships for four straight years and is currently ranked 27th nationally (9-1, foil, t-3rd), Joseph Streb who is a three-time member of the US Worlds Veterans team (9-1, foil, 5th place) and Lynn Botelho who is ranked in the top three in the women's veterans category (5-3, foil, 16th place).

The 119 fencers represented nine states (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas and Virginia) and four countries (France, Germany, Israel and Russia).

CSU returns to action this weekend when they travel to Evanston, Ill. for the Northwestern Duals where the Vikings will face 12 schools including Johns Hopkins, North Carolina, Princeton, Northwestern and Duke. The duals will start on Saturday (Jan. 30) and continue on Sunday (Jan. 31).
