Vikings Victorious At CSU Invitational

Cleveland, Ohio - The Cleveland State fencing teams got the new-year under way with the CSU Invitational today, when the Vikings hosted Bowling Green and Case Western Reserve in Woodling Gymnasium. The men's team recorded victories over Bowling Green, 17-4 and Case Western, 14-13. The women were victorious over Bowling Green, 4-3 and fell to Case Western, 21-3.

"Everyone had a great today and it was good to get back into competition," head coach Andy Tulleners said. "I was very proud of everyone today and it's great to fence at home and have everyone come out and support us. Tomorrow will be a great open with a lot of great competition and I'm really looking forward to seeing what we can do there."

Liran Gross led the men with a perfect 6-0 record on the day in the foil, 3-0 against both Bowling Green and Case Western.

Also recording perfect records on the day were John Marshall, 6-0 in Epee events, Steve Montgomery, 6-0 in the foil and Matt Itomlenskis, 1-0 in the epee.

Patrick Weber and Bryan Twitchell both had a 5-1 record on the day, Weber in the epee and Twitchell in the saber.

Ben Brown was the last Viking to compete today, recording a 2-4 record on the day in the foil.

Brooke Snyder led the women, with an overall record of 5-1 on the day, 3-0 in the foil and 2-1 in the epee. Jessica Malicki was the final Viking to compete for the women, with a 2-4 record in the foil.

The Vikings return to action tomorrow (Jan. 24) when the Viking fencing teams host the John Szent-Kiraly Memorial Open, with action beginning at 9:00 a.m. in Woodling Gym.
