Matthew Gebbett enters his fourth season as the Volunteer Associate Head Coach of the men’s and women’s fencing teams at Cleveland State University. Gebbett joined the staff after graduating from Cleveland State in 2018.

Gebbett assisted with the men’s team placing second and the women’s team third at the Central Collegiate Conference Championships. At the championship, all three men’s weapons teams finished as the runner-up while the women’s epee team placed third overall. The Vikings brought in seven All-Conference awards with four on the men’s side and three on the women’s.

In the 2021 shortened season, Gebbett helped six athletes qualify for the NCAA Championships, three men and three women. The six fencers qualifying, tied the most NCAA qualifiers in a single season in program history.

During his second year on staff, Gebbett helped the men post their best result at the Midwest Championships, taking second while the women finished sixth. During this season, 21 student-athletes qualified for the NCAA Regional, the most in program history.

In year one, he helped the Vikings finish men finish 20th at the 2018 Midwest Conference Championships. 

Gebbett was a four-year member of the team, winning gold in the Saber competition at the CSU Fall Open during his junior year.
