Madison, NJ-The Cleveland State fencing teams competed Sunday at the season opening Drew Fall Invitational. The meet allowed both teams to compete against other opponents for the first time and prepare for the upcoming schedule.
The men's team finished 3-3 on the day, starting with a strong victory over Yeshiva and also picking up wins over Long Island and host Drew. The women were unable to claim a victory.
Epee was the strongest weapon of the day for the Vikings. The men's squad, comprised of John Hackman, Jesse Ndjeka, Merik Pohl, De'Mario Steele and Weymouth Walker combined for a 31-23 record on the day. The Vikings won the event in four of the six duals.
The women's epee team of Gwen Nelson, Rayllen Prafil Capaccio, Lily Robertson and Maia Taylor Cassamayor had a strong day as well, finishing with a 37-17 record, including a 9-0 sweep of Yeshiva to start the day.
