South Bend, IN-The Cleveland State Fencing teams had a great showing at the DeCicco Duals hosted by the University of Notre Dame on Saturday. The men's and women's teams finished with identical 5-2 records in the seven-round tournament.
The Viking women started the day with four consecutive wins. They defeated Lawrence in round one and followed it up with a win over Denison in round two. CSU took down Wayne State in round three and dominated Detroit Mercy in round four. Following two losses to Northwestern and Notre Dame, the Vikings rebounded to defeat Florida to close the day.
The Men dropped their first contest of the day, but followed that up with with a four match win streak of their own. Cleveland State downed Denison, Wayne State, Detroit Mercy and Northwestern in successive rounds. The Vikings then fell to Notre Dame and defeated Florida in the final round of the day to finish at 5-2.
For the men, Foil was the strongest weapon on the day. The Vikings finished a combined 50-13 on the day, including four 9-0 sweeps.
On the women's side, Epee was the strongest. The Vikings won it in four of the seven matches and finished with a combined record of 41-22. Cleveland State registered one 9-0 sweep, as well as two 8-1 marks on the day.
Cleveland State travels to Northwestern next for the Northwestern Duals, taking place next weekend on Saturday and Sunday.
