Vikings Combine for 11 Wins at Notre Dame

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Cleveland State University fencing team had a successful day of competition at the DeCicco Duals Saturday inside Notre Dame's Castellan Family Fencing Center.

The CSU men went 6-1 in dual action while the women were 5-2 with all three setbacks coming to top-10 foes. Perhaps most noteworthy, the Viking women beat two opponents they lost to earlier this season while the Cleveland State men also knocked off a team they came up short against earlier this month.

The CSU men posted victories over Lawrence (20-7), Northwestern (24-3), Florida (23-4), Detroit Mercy (25-2) and Wayne State (16-11). The Vikings then dropped a matchup to No. 2 Notre Dame (2-25) before rebounding with a win over Denison (21-6) to finish the day.

The Viking women claimed a victory over Lawrence to begin the day (15-11) before dropping a matchup with No. 9 Northwestern (10-17). CSU then knocked off Florida (20-7), Detroit Mercy (17-9) and Wayne State (14-13) in succession. After a loss to No. 1 Notre Dame (3-24), the Vikings finished the day with a thrilling 14-13 win over Denison.

The epee unit led the way for the CSU women by garnering 40 victories, including an 8-1 win over nationally ranked Northwestern. The epee unit was also key in turning around a defeat to Wayne State from earlier this month as they posted the shutout against the Warriors, a three-point improvement from the meeting earlier this season.

The foil unit added 31 victories for the Viking women and was the key reason CSU took down Lawrence after losing to them earlier this month. After tallying just three victories against Lawrence last time out, the foil squad contributed seven wins Saturday to help flip the script.

The CSU men totaled 131 victories Saturday, and each weapon group contributed at least 40 of those wins. The foil unit led the way with 49 while the saber squad had 42. After posting just two victories last time out against Wayne State, the saber unit won seven matchups Saturday to help CSU defeat the Warriors. The foil unit also improved two points compared to the loss to Wayne State earlier this season.

Cleveland State will conclude the regular season next Saturday, Feb. 1, at Northwestern's Winter NU Duals.
