CSU Men Go 4-1, Women’s Foil Beats OSU at Detroit

DETROIT, Mich. - The Cleveland State University fencing team opened the second semester of action Sunday at the Detroit Mercy Invitational inside Calihan Hall.

Both genders had successes to take away from the day, with the men netting four wins while the women's foil team notched a victory over Ohio State.

The CSU men posted a 4-1 record on the day while the Viking women went 3-3. The women were in every matchup against their opposition as their three setbacks came by a combined five points.

The CSU men knocked off host Detroit Mercy (23-4) and then Lawrence (20-7) to begin the day. After a loss to Wayne State (9-18), they bounced back with convincing wins over Michigan State (23-4) and Oakland (23-4) to end the day.

The CSU women notched a victory over the host Titans to begin the day (20-7). The Vikings then couldn't catch a break as they came up one point short against both Ohio State (13-14) and Lawrence (13-14) before dropping another close match against Wayne State (12-15). CSU ended the day strongly, claiming easy wins over Michigan State (19-7) and Oakland (27-0).

The epee unit led the way for the CSU men by contributing 36 victories on the day while the foil unit was right behind with 35.

The epee group also topped the charts for the CSU women by racking up 43 victories on the day. The foil unit had a fantastic performance against the Buckeyes, netting an 8-1 victory against their in-state foe.

CSU will be right back in action next weekend as it heads east to compete in the Army Invitational and the Vassar Invitational.
