COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Cleveland State University men's and women's fencing teams competed at the Elite Invitational Duals Saturday inside Ohio State's French Field House.

Neither team was able to gain a win, but the men's foil and women's epee squad each picked up upset victories throughout the day. Each of the Vikings' opponents was ranked within the top 25 nationally. North Carolina is ranked 24th, Cornell is ranked 18th, Northwestern currently sits at 11th, and the host Buckeyes are ranked third.

Men's Foil Upsets The University of North Carolina.

The men's foil squad of Ahmad Taqi, Will Waters, Sawyer Cornett and Jakarri Kent pulled off a 5-4 upset over the Tar Heels. The last time Cleveland State beat North Carolina was in the 2006-2007 season. After being subbed in, Kent pulled out the fifth and final victory to secure the win for Cleveland State. The men's foil squad was one win shy of picking up their second upset victory of the day but fell to Ohio State, 4-5. The men's epee unit also was one win shy of upsetting the Buckeyes but also fell, 4-5.

Women's Epee Upsets Cornell

Abigail Barr and Karina Grossl pulled off the 5-4 upset over Cornell. Fencing a person down, the Vikings started the match off in a 0-3 hole, but responded by pulling out five straight victories to defeat the Big Red. Fencing from behind in each bout, the CSU women were able to overcome the early deficits and pull off the first victory against Cornell in program history.

"The team as a whole has shown steady and consistent improvement throughout the season. We fenced much better at OSU compared to our first meet. I'm very pleased with the direction we are going and looking forward to seeing how the rest of the season unfolds."

The CSU men currently sit at 11-3 on the season while the women drop to 8-8 on the year. The Vikings are now off for the rest of the semester and they will resume action on the second weekend of January at the Detroit Mercy Fencing Invitational.
