CLEVELAND, Ohio – Three members of the Cleveland State University fencing team competed at the NCAA Midwest Regional as the Viking program hosted the event Saturday inside Woodling Gymnasium.

It was the third time in the past 20 years that Cleveland State has hosted an NCAA Fencing Regional event, the final qualification step in advance of the NCAA Championships.

The event featured the top-ranked team in the country on the both the men's and women's sides.

On the women's side, Notre Dame (No. 1), Ohio State (No. 3) and Northwestern (No. 9) all sit among the top 10 in the most recent national poll. On the men's side, Ohio State (No. 1) and Notre Dame (No. 4) were both among the top five nationally entering the event.

Two Viking women took part in the foil event Saturday. Senior Sarah Mok finished 11th while freshman Emma Hartlaub took 14th, one spot higher than her seed. Mok collected four wins in her final NCAA regional competition. She also lost a tight battle, 5-3, to Notre Dame's Elyssa Kleiner, who finished in second place in the event.

Freshman Declan Forth posted an eighth place finish in the men's saber event. He notched wins over a pair of Detroit Mercy athletes Saturday.
