Forth, Mok Post Top-10 Finishes at Midwest Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Five members of the Cleveland State University fencing team competed on the opening day of the 2018 Midwest Fencing Conference Championships Saturday inside Ohio State's French Field House.

The opening day of the two-day Championships featured the individual portion of the competition.

Freshman Declan Forth finished in seventh place in the men's saber competition. He received a bye during pool play and then won his first two direct elimination matches by scores of 15-8 and 15-10 to reach the quarterfinals. His run came to an end against a Buckeye fencer that ended up taking the bronze.

Classmate Isaiah Williams was 32nd in the same event, among 57 competitors. Williams upset the #18 seed in his first bracket match but could not advance further.

Senior Sarah Mok finished in ninth place in the women's foil competition. She, too, was exempt from pool play. She won her opening bout in the bracket format before bowing out of the event. Sophomore Alexandra Kremer finished in 45th place, improving six spots from her seed.

Sophomore Vincenzo Trovato improved five spots from his seed in the epee event to finish 16th. He won all four of his pool matches, claiming two victories by 5-1 scores and two by 5-3 tallies. Trovato won his opening two bracket matches before coming up short, 15-8, to the third seed.

Cleveland State will conclude its action in the Championships Sunday with the team portion of the competition.
