CLEVELAND, Ohio – Six student-athletes from the Cleveland State University fencing team competed as the program hosted the ninth annual John Szent-Kiraly Open Sunday inside Woodling Gymnasium.
Freshman Declan Forth posted the highest individual finish by a Viking on the day by taking fifth in the saber event. Forth won his pool en route to his fifth-place finish.
Sophomore Vincenzo Trovato posted the best finish by a Viking in both the foil and epee events.
Trovato was seeded 21st entering the foil event but ended up finishing 13th. He tallied three wins in pool play and an upset win in his first direct elimination match before falling to the eventual champion of the event. Trovato then blasted through his pool in epee, posting a 6-0 mark, and would eventually finish in 17th in that discipline, out of the 50 competitors.
Sophomore Jakarri Kent placed 18th in the foil event. He finished second in his pool with a 4-1 mark.
Other Vikings to compete Sunday were freshman Emma Hartlaub (32nd in foil), junior Colton Porter (31st in epee) and freshman Isaiah Williams (19th in saber).
Assistant coach John King competed in both the epee and foil events and finished 8th and 28th, respectively.
Cleveland State will return to dual action at the NU Duals, hosted by Northwestern, on the first weekend of February.
